The worth of the world is an average of the people on earth. This is true about the physical aspects of the world and the mental side of it too. This means that what each individual does affects the whole world in its entirety.
This is why so many people today are trying to get the rest of humanity to do better. It makes sense to want everyone to do better and be better since what each one does either brings up or down all of humanity.
But here’s a question for you. Of all of the things in the world, what is the one thing over which we have the most control?
Before we answer this, let’s understand why this question even matters. There is a part of the Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebhur that I believe we should all internalize:
“God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.”
Why is it important to know the difference? Because spending time and effort changing things which are outside our control is a waste of our resources. And ultimately, our resources are always limited. Our resources should be spent on the things we can change since that is where the best results will be.
So we go back to our question:
Of all of the things in the world, what is the one thing over which we have the most control?
The answer is – ourselves.
Of all the things in the world, the one thing over which we have the most control is ourselves. And this is great news because each improvement that we make in ourselves, by default, improves the world overall! Why? Because as we said in the beginning, the worth of the world is the average of all of the people in it.
The added bonus is that as we improve ourselves, other people will take notice and may decide on improving themselves also. Thereby creating an even bigger change overall. So instead of wasting your efforts on trying to change the world, work on improving yourself.
